The strategic position of Turkey as a NATO outside border to the Middle East, as well
as the experiences during the major conflicts at the end of the 20th century as the
“Gulf War” and the “Kosovo Conflict”, forced the Turkish Air Force Command, to
analyze in detail and to improve their training scenarios in terms of functionality,
effectiveness and transferability. As an immediate measure, the Turkish Air Force
actively participated for the first time in August 1997 with 6 F-16s on "Red Flag" at
Nellis. The particularly positive results obtained during these exercise, have moved
the Turkish Air Force to establish a similar exercise in their own country. Already in
May 1998 and end September 1998 two "Anatolian Flag" maneuvers were carried
out in Đncirlik with Turkish and American participants. The analysis of the results led
the Turkish Air Force Command in June 2000 to award the contract for building up a
training center in Turkey for future similar exercises. Already in the following year the
first "Anatolian Eagle" exercise was held . . .
